FatFoe is not just an eggplant derived diet pill, but an miracle cure of sorts,
which is said to allow users to lose up to 10 pounds a week without exercising and while still eating their favorite fatty foods.
If you want to believe this is possible, you can go to the site which the FTC and Canada’s Competition Bureau has set up to warn people off of such outrageous claims. This is an interesting approach to help educate people who want the quick fix. After reading the warnings, it will be interesting to see if their next step is to type ‘diet pill’ into Google again, to check for different results, in case there is a way to avoid actually having to make a lifestyle change.

livinlavidalocarb makes a valid point about the new food pyramid for kids…
That’s cute and all, but does anybody else see the irony in this? Here is a new health program designed to get kids to become more active and eat right and what is it encouraging them to do? Sit in front of a computer screen and play this silly little game all day! “But mommy, I don’t want to go outside and play, I want to sit here and stay fat while I play this computer game!” Was anybody thinking when they came up with THIS idea? Oh yeah, we are still talking about the government. Enough said.
I wonder if this will make any difference in the obesity rates of children in North America. I was once a director of a day camp for kids, where they brought their lunch in. There was one child who became very hyper after lunch. When I investigated what was in his lunch, I found out that his parents let him pack his own lunch, so he had packed himself a jar of icing. I advice against this choice for a balanced lunch!
Ok, I strayed a little off-topic, but the point is, it is not a matter of what guides are out there to help prevent obesity in children, it is about choices and activities children and parents make everyday. Do they go out for a walk, or do they sit at the computer? Do they eat a healthy lunch or a jar of icing?

Listen, guys and gals, don’t eat less than 1200 calories a day. Just don’t do it. If you aren’t getting the caloric deficit you need on 1200 calories a day (ie: you are a small woman) then exercise more, but at less that 1200 a day you are just not eating in way thats healthy.
After all, this thing you’re doing - this effort - is mostly to be healthier, not just to look good (tho that’s nice too, I know, I know):
“I promise that I am not starving myself. I know that 900 calories is very low, but it isn’t starvation low, especially since I can only eat small amounts of things to begin with. I went through this same sort of eating schedule after my surgery. I got laxed, though, and started eating the wrong things and I stopped losing weight. This time it’ll be different. I’ll make it different. It will take me about a week to get this diet into my system as a habitual thing, and after that I’ll be doing it until I lose the weight. I’ll still be taking my vitamins and calcium, and getting my protein in. That’s the main thing that I am supposed to worry about post-surgery. I’ll still be going and getting my bloodwork regularly. I’ll be monitored by my parents. Nutritionists and doctors probably wouldn’t be able to tell me if it’s healthy or not because most don’t understand what patients have to do after Gastric Bypass Surgery.”

Soccer player Diego Maradona has started a trend as Colombians sue to be able to have gastric-bypass surgery so they too can magically drop all that excess fat and become male models:
“The former Argentine soccer star dropped 110 pounds through gastric bypass surgery, and now Colombians want it too. Maradona weighed 266 pounds before he had the surgery in March. Since losing the weight, he’s been jetting around the world, showing off his new body.Overweight Colombians are flocking to doctors for the same procedure. At least 14 Colombians have filed lawsuits to have government-provided health insurance pay for the same surgery.”

An excellent NYT article points out that there is a growing trend towards fitness clubs using fat personal trainers.
Since these trainers are themselves struggling to lose weight, students can relate to them more easily and don’t have to face the hopelessly out-of-reach perfect body exhorting them to do just “one more”. Personally I think this is great - who the hell wants to be trained by Wonder Woman when its all you can do just survive for twenty minutes.
“Heavier fitness instructors and personal trainers are becoming more common, owners of health clubs and gyms say. Carol Espel, the national director of group fitness for Equinox, said she had observed the trend at conferences, in her own gyms and at other clubs. “There’s always been a handful of overweight trainers,” she said, but the number rose after research in the late 1990’s showed that it is possible for people to be overweight and also very fit. Since then, she said, many clients have come to value exercise for its effect not just on weight but also on health, and they have grown more accepting of overweight trainers.”
Via Big Fat Blog who has only one comment for those gyms who frown on hiring heavier trainers: “Uh, dumbass?”
Oldies, but Goodies!
Bye bye bagel. Allow yourself a raisin off the top of that sucker! Eat like a mouse, for those extra few years of eating like a mouse. Ok, maybe that is too harsh a summary of this topic. A more generous description at wired news tells both sides of the […]

Ha! So I have the Slim in 6 program, which I actually really like (and have used it to lose a very stubborn 7 lbs). I ‘went off’ it for a while and have just returned to it after months of not doing it. All I can say is OUCH!! I am […]

The demand for vegan meals is rising on college campuses in the U.S.
Out of 100,000 college students surveyed, nearly a quarter said finding vegan meals on campus–which contain no meat, fish, poultry or other products derived from animals such as dairy, eggs or honey–was important to them. […]
The Independent reports that sales of green tea are soaring. Long known for its potential cancer fighting properties, many are also discovering it as a good diet aid. This is most likely, just the caffeine, as caffeine is an excellent hunger suppressant and gives you that energy boost to potentially work out harder […]
